Clean seas - fight eutrophication

Ascidians improve the marine environment by filtering phytoplankton, which in their turn live on solar energy, carbon dioxide and nutrients. Higher concentrations of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus in the water lead to a higher phytoplankton production, which in turn may give rise to oxygen free bottoms and increases the risk for toxic algae blooms. High nutrient levels are also responsible for excess algae along the shores. When harvesting the ascidians we remove at the same time the nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon incorporated in the ascidian tissue.
